Parkour

A What is parkour? The answer is not simple. This is because parkour means different things to different people. Some people call it a sport, some people call it a "physical discipline". The best way to understand parkour is to watch of people doing it. If you watch these videos you will see people (mostly young men), running, jumping, and climbing over obstacles. This is a central idea of parkour: overcoming obstacles, whether they are mental or physical. People practice parkour mostly in urban environments, but also in parks and other natural places.

B It is difficult to accurately talk about the history of parkour because it has not been thoroughly researched. Some of the things that traceurs (people who do parkour) do now, people have been doing for a long time. For example, when humans hunted tens of thousands of years ago, they were running and avoiding obstacles to catch their prey. There are also similarities between parkour and martial arts such as Kung-Fu, which people have been practicing for a long time.

C Modern parkour first started in France. There was a small group of young men living near Paris that started practicing what we now know as parkour. These men included David Belle, Sebastien Foucan, Kazuma and Stephane Vigroux, Yahn Hnautra, David Malgogne and Frederic Hnautra. But it is David Belle who has gotten the most credit for founding and promoting parkour. These men started practicing parkour in the late 1980s and 1990s. Parkour became more popular between 2001 and 2005, when several movies were made about the subject. This helped increase its popularity.

D There are many benefits to doing parkour. The most obvious one is improved physical fitness. Another benefit is increased self-confidence and increased self-esteem because being able to perform difficult and challenging movements with your body makes you feel good about yourself. Doing parkour also makes you know yourself better. Because parkour is not a competitive sport, traceurs challenge themselves. They test their limits and through this they learn about themselves. There is also a growing community of other people who practice parkour. If you join one of these groups, you will make friends and get a sense of belonging.

E Although each person practices parkour in their own way, there are many common movements that all traceurs make. A basic move is the, which means "landing" in English. A involves running at something, such as a wall, and climbing over it. Another move is called the , which involves going over something using your hands. These are just three moves in parkour, but there are many more.

F Although parkour is relatively new, its increasing popularity suggests that it will still be here in the future.
